She received her Bachelor of Music at the Crane School of Music at Potsdam State University, NY, her M.A. from Montclair State University, and her doctorate in music from the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. Dr. Freeman is also a concert violist and she performs on the violin and viola with the Bergen County Philharmonic Orchestra and is a freelance musician with many NJ and NY orchestras. She taught instrumental music in the Ridgewood, NJ Public Schools from 1982-2012. During this time, Dr. Freeman established a second career as one of the world's few Holocaust ethnomusicologists, an expert in the music of the Jewish people interned in the World War II ghettos and concentration camps. Dr. Freeman's dissertation is our country's first and only Holocaust music curriculum for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. She has performed Holocaust music lecture-recitals throughout the U.S. including the NJ State House, the Dallas Holocaust Museum, the Chattauqua Institution, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and many houses of worship. Dr. Freeman now works full-time as a Holocaust Ethnomusicologist, writing books, teaching music classes, performing recitals, and researching. On May 4, 2014, Dr. Freeman will conduct the first All-State Teen Holocaust music concert in the U.S., which will take place at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, NJ. Tamara and her husband, Barry Freeman Ed.D. reside in Saddle River and are the proud parents of Anne (28) and Rachel (26).
